How did people wake up
before there were alarm clocks?
HOME
In early 18th Century England, Mary Smith, the pea shooter woke up her town.

Mary Smith shot dried peas to rouse the sleeping townspeople, so they could start their day on time.  These people were called "knocker-ups," and were hired and paid a few pence a week to wake up the town.  The book Mary Smith, by Andrea U'Ren is a Red Clover book we have been reading to our classes in the library.
