Scholastic Book Fair February, 2004

January 10, 2004

It all began one wintry morning in January when Captain Flickinger met with mates Lurie and Daudelin in the captain’s quarters.  The ship was rocking from the 10-foot waves and important documents and maps were strewn all over the cold wet planks.  Plans were being made to organize the Biggest Scholastic Book Fair ever with all the crew.  The first event was the breakfast for the ship’s officers and crew.  Lurie and Daudelin contacted community members for donations of food (bagels, cream cheese, danish, coffee, juice, fruit, paper goods from Grand Union, Klinger’s Bakery, Burlington Bagel Shop, and Dunkin Donuts) who generously gave these items for the starving book deprived crew!  Here’s what the boat looked like:

The crew prepared all night.  The passengers enjoyed the feast without pirates!  All 45 crewmembers came to browse, buy, and eat merrily.  The volunteers came early before school to set everything up including flowers.  They helped so much.

Hours were spent writing letters to the passengers of the boat letting them know about the upcoming Book Fair.  They each received information about the book certificates, book series purchases, a brochure of sample books for sale, and the drawings to be held at the (Family) Event and Pizza Dinner.  Daudelin and Lurie sent all crewmembers invitations.  They were busy! It truly was their party.

The ship was decorated for pirates.  We were even protected by Polly Parrot.  Seashells covered the tables for the crew to guess how many were in each jar.  “Be careful not to have crabs snap at your fingers!”  The treasure chest had more drawings and crew (teachers) could choose their favorite books for members to buy.  Posters and signs were hung all over the ship by volunteer crewmembers.  The captain even had help from a few colonists on land.

Passengers were arriving.  Were we ready?  Let’s ask our crewmembers?  “Aye, Aye, Captain.  Send ‘em in, blimy!”

“Do we look ready, let the treasures begin!!”

Their enthusiasm is effusive.  No robberies on board.  The crew won’t allow it, only satisfied and happy passengers.                                           Everyone was into the “Pirate” theme and    worked as a team.

All is quiet before the storm, shhhhhhhhh!  Then, more passengers arrive, causing havoc on the ship. The crew called for more help from land.

Ships arrived with more aid!  Red bandanas found their way to our ship.  Was it enough to take care of our passengers?

Ask the captain?

“Me mates!  Looks to me that we are going to have an ambush and mutiny!  Bring on more help!”  The captain consults with the officers.
Land volunteers come to the rescue of the crowds.  Once again, the crew came through.  My volunteers thought of everything to make this evening comlete; furry friends for all the kids, too.

Passengers have bought more books than ever.  That is 20% more than last year.  The crew and passengers are all very content with full bellies and full heads.  Seven gift certificates were handed out to lucky passengers for playing a treasure hunt, guessing the right number of seashells, and bringing in their family event invitations.
After five long days at sea and one month prior, preparing for this ship extravaganza, the Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success.  However, this is not the end.  The crew has more work to do with more help needed even from the smallest of smallest.

Even the captain, after meeting with all the crew, decided that this was the best ever because of the magnificent crew and the time they shared and spent with the community and passengers.   The smallest of volunteers made morning announcements on the intercom for one week straight advertising the fair to the whole school community.

Lucky crewmember got a chance to count the loot.  She also personally brought every student who won the books certificates to the ship (library) to help them select and redeem their treasures (books.)

The End………….

Diary Entry…February 11, 2004

Everyone has gone; the volunteers and the students, families, and faculty.  What remains is one very successful Scholastic Book Fair as a result of tireless, energetic, committed volunteers who helped to make this a tremendous success.  Each day, there were at least three to four volunteers working for the entire week to assist with book sales and questions, checking out customers, reshelving and reordering, and maintaining the “pirate” theme for the book fair.  I was able to maintain my Media Center Classes in individual classrooms as a result of these volunteers.  From making bandanas, decorating thematic stations, organizing drawings, soliciting community business donations, encouraging families to attend the Family Evening Event, and preparing mailers to staff and families, they were quite resourceful and helpful.  Our evening event was a success as a result of the 15 volunteers being there to facilitate sales and comfort.  It truly is their love of children and books that made everything come together.  Working together made the whole event have a purpose.  It is the first time I have ever felt that we are all one united group.  Everyone cared!! Even Pooh and Tigger arrived?  The youngest of volunteers this year truly made this event a school wide, community wide, and family event.  I feel the all around effort from everyone’s part truly made a difference this year.  Look at the photos and I think you will see this for yourself.  Enjoy the sail!!!!!

Thank you and happy journeys to reading.  Bon Voyage………Captain Flickinger
