W is for walrus

Walruses were very important to the Northern Native Americans.  They used walruses for food.  They also used walruses' bones for weapons and used skin for clothing and for their homes.

Northern Native Americans moved around looking for food and game. In the summer they caught walruses by taking spears and riding in canoes and throwing the spears at the walruses.    In the winter they looked for the walruses under the ice.  Walruses are mammals and need to breathe oxygen.  Northern Native Americans knew this, but they didn't know where the breathing holes were.  Their sled dog teams had very good noses, so the dogs sniffed out the holes.
