| Pegasus, the winged horse constellation is visible through August through December. | |
| In mythology, Pegasus's dad and mom were Poseidon and Medusa. When the hero Perseus cut off Medusa's head, Pegasus sprang from her body and was born. | |
| One day a man named Bellerophon went to the god Athena for help on finding a steed to ride when killing the monster Chimera, a creature that was part lion, snake, and goat. Athena told him to go to the well, Pirene, and capture Pegasus with a golden bridle she had given him. | |
| When the horse was
drinking from the well, Bellerophon captured Pegasus and rode him while
killing Chimera.
The gods then gave Bellerophon, Pegasus, for killing the monster.
Bellerophon had many adventures riding on Pegasus. One day, he decided to fly to Mount Olympus, where the gods lived. When the gods heard about what he was going to do, they were angry. So they sent down a gadfly to sting Pegasus. When Bellerophon was on his way to Mount Olympus, the gadfly struck Pegasus, which made him throw off Bellerophon. Bellerophon fell to earth and died. |
