The most famous star in Ursa Minor is Polaris which is the north star.  If you stand at the north pole Polaris is almost overhead.  If you spot Polaris in the sky, you can always tell which way is north.  To find Polaris first you need to find Ursa Majar.  Then if you find the end of the Big Dippers cup the go upwards then the next bright star is Polaris.  The distance to Polaris is five times the angle between the two stars at the end of the cup of the Big Dipper.
