Maria Mitchell was the first female American astronomer.  She was born on August 1, 1818. Her father taught all ten children  the basics of astronomy. Maria Mitchell understood it the best out of all the children and helped her father with his work.  In 1847 she earned an International gold medal from the King of Denmark when she discovered a very important comet, which was named after her. Vasser, which is the college Maria Mitchell went to, hired her as their first astronomer.  Maria Mitchell also traveled 2,000 miles to chase down the eclipse of 1878.
