Caribou
Caribou are a type of deer that live in the arctic. They are also known as reindeer. In the summer they eat leaves and grass, in the winter they scrape away the snow with their big feet to eat lichens (something like moss). Both male and female caribou have antlers which they loose once a year and grow new ones. Caribou travel great distances each year to the southern arctic in the winter and back up to the northern part in the summer where they have their babies. Caribou are important to the people of the arctic for their meat, fur, and skin. Even their bones and antlers can be used to make tools. The caribou's main enemy is the wolf
Special fact: It is the wide shape of the caribou's foot that allows it to step so easily in the snow. Their feet are like snowshoes! Caribou can be trained to carry people on their backs like a horse or to pull sleighs.
