| Seals |
| Seals are mammals (animals with fur
who give birth to live young) that live in the sea. In
the spring, they come onto the land to have babies. They
are great swimmers who eat mostly fish and squid. They
keep warm in the cold water of the arctic by their fur
and a layer of fat underneath their skin called blubber.
Baby harp seals are born with white fluffy coats. Their
dark adult coat begins to grow in after 10 days. Special fact: The Inuit people of the arctic who have always depended on seals for food and clothing, still hunt a small number of seals each year. But there are laws to protect baby seals and make sure that outsiders who do not depend on seal for food do not over hunt. |
